LP Language Unit 3 Spring Semester 2021

Written Assessment (W1)

Invitation: 

With your team of 2-3 members produce a prototype, initiative or CIP project that addresses the following prompt:  

How as RC students can we embrace our core values and work to better our community (RC, Istanbul and Turkey)? 

You will earn 25 CIP hours for this project. 

Learning Goals:

  • Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.
  • Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.

Mindsets: 

  • Learn from Failure: Embrace those times when things just didn't work out. 
  • Make it: Create something. Gather the ideas in your head and create something meaningful. 
  • Create Confidence: You have big ideas and the ability to act on them. 
  • Empathy: Step into another person's shoes, understand their lives and solve problems from their perspective. 
  • Embrace Ambiguity: We don't have to have the answer. We just have to give ourselves permission to explore. 
  • Optimism: Believe that we can build a better future. 
  • Iterate: Understand the value of feedback to any process. 
  • Collaborate: Learn to work as a team, manage conflicts and seek resolutions.

Introduction: 

February 22nd - 26th 

Experience Design Thinking: 

As an introduction to design thinking, you’ll participate in the Shoe Design Challenge. 

Checkpoint 1:

Investigative Question/Being Research

(2 weeks)

March 1 - 12th 

  1. In your newly formed teams, write an open-ended question that will guide your investigation and define your social problem. You can create a new question or continue with your previous topic from your podcast project. 
  2. Create 7-10 sub-questions that will help you fully investigate your topic. 
  3. We’ll have two sessions with Ms. Keyman. The first will be about the CRAAP test, which will help you evaluate sources. The second will introduce you to our school’s databases and provide you with more search tips to guide your research. 
  4. You will have already been introduced to Noodle Tools from your session on Feb. 15th. You should set up your project on Noodle Tools and start adding your resources. 
  5. Create a research plan that outlines your goals and process. 
  6. Document your progress in your group podcast (3-5 minutes) 

Checkpoint 2 

Deep listening Interviews and Survey 

(2 weeks)

due approx. March 15th - 26th 

Now that you have a clear focus for your project, you’ll need to gather more research by conducting interviews and gathering data through surveys. 

  • Research SDGs and explore which specific goals relate to your social issue. 
  • Research possible interview subjects. 
  • Create interview questions and schedule interviews. Use your experiences from unit 3 to develop your questions and contact your interview subjects. 
  • You will have a session with Ms. Halicioglu where she will teach you how to create an effective survey. 
  • Draft your survey. Get feedback from your teacher. Follow the guidelines for submitting your survey (this process can take several weeks). 
  • Analyze the data that you receive from your survey. 
  • a working bibliography of at least 8-10 primary and secondary sources to use as a starting point for your research.  Be sure to run a CRAAP test for each source to make sure it is a strong source for your project!
  • Document your progress in your group podcast (3-5 minutes) 

Checkpoint 3

Ideate 

(1 week)

March 29th - April 2nd

  • Practice convergent, divergent and emergent thinking as you explore a solution to a problem.    

End of research process 

Checkpoint 4: 

Define your solution 

(2 weeks)

April 5th - 16th 

  • How to define a solution focusing on empowerment, impact and sustainability? 
  • Explore various types of promotional material and begin working on your media campaign. Create one piece of content. Share with the class for feedback. 
  • You will have a session with Ms. Keyman about copyright and collective commons. 
  • Document your progress in your group podcast. 

Checkpoint 5:  

Prototype

April 26th - May 7th 

  • Build your prototype to create a tool for your users and investors to visualize and experience your solution. 
  • Samples: DID For Youth/ Raise Your Voice
  • Create a poster, infographic, instagram content or another type of social media content to share your prototype.
  • Document your progress in your group podcast.                                                             

Checkpoint 6: How to pitch an idea 

May 10th - 14th 

  • Use rhetorical appeals and other devices to create a presentation for your users and other investors.                                                                                                                                                            

Checkpoint 7: Present it to Your Class Community & Keep a record of the feedback you receive. 

May 17th - 21st 

  • Each team presents their prototype and project to the class community.
  • Everyone gives feedback on each project. 
  • Take the feedback shared with you and improve your prototype. 

Checkpoint 8: 

Present to Community: 

CIP/Admin or other stakeholders. 

May 24th - June 4th 

  • Each team will present their prototype or project to their chosen audience.
