The victims of bullying may have long-term health consequences in the form of chronic inflammation. The bullies may experience better health from higher social status, unless they are also victims. Researchers at Duke Medicine examined the biological effects of bullying into adulthood. In addition to higher levels of anxiety and depression, bullied children are often more likely to get sick and experience pain. Levels of C-reactive protein are impacted by nutrition, sleep, infection, and psychosocial factors. Low-grade inflammation occurred at similar levels to victims of other childhood traumas.

Bullying is not a rite of passage, but a serious threat. One in 3 kids (13 million) will be bullied this year; students with disabilities are bullied 2-to-3 times more often than their peers; 90% of autistic kids are bullied; kids who are bullied are 9 times more likely to commit suicide.
